  • Added a concern to the criterion "The proposal takes into account that the school has a finite budget ": "We completed this collaboration with acknowledgement that this criterion was not directly addressed by the agreement. However, we suggest that in such a scenario, a study group could be set up. This could explore how to access internal and external resources to support the building of the new separate gender-neutral bathroom/change-room/shower area, potentially soliciting donations of materials, labour, and expertise in the community and applying for grants. "

  • Hi Kevin, thank you for this input. I took the role of someone with the view you present above. The conservative parent expressed concern that taking time to define academic focus detracted from our purpose to find agreement about bathrooms. That parent then suggested the modified criterion "whatever we decide will support the students in their learning" which we unanimously supported. Does that satisfy you as well? NB.

New Criterion


TIP: Does the criterion have these helpful characteristics?

  1. Is noncontroversial
  2. Can be evaluated (subjectively)
  3. Uses positive language (what is wanted rather than what is not wanted)
  4. Is relevant to the context
  5. Is operational (can in principle be made to happen)
  6. Applies to everyone (this is a need that everyone can recognize, not just one person’s need)
  7. Doesn’t have a specific outcome (as long as it’s noncontroversial, this is the least important characteristic)
