Topic: On hot summer days, some young boys open the fire hydrants to play with water. Neighbours with balconies overlooking the promenade yell at the boys about wasting the water. A facilitator offers to gather the neighbourhood to decide ways to share the common space that work for all. Roles: 1. 10-year-old boys playing with fire hydrants, living a few block away, from racialized lower class families 2. Parent(s) of the boys 3. White retirees, complaining about these games, owning their apartments that have balconies looking over the alley (a walkway), yelling at the children about wasting the water 4. Neighbours witnessing both the play and the yelling, wanting some ease in the neighbourhood

New Criterion

TIP: Does the criterion have these helpful characteristics?

  1. Is noncontroversial
  2. Can be evaluated (subjectively)
  3. Uses positive language (what is wanted rather than what is not wanted)
  4. Is relevant to the context
  5. Is operational (can in principle be made to happen)
  6. Applies to everyone (this is a need that everyone can recognize, not just one person’s need)
  7. Doesn’t have a specific outcome (as long as it’s noncontroversial, this is the least important characteristic)
